Did you dream about an ex-girlfriend? Was it a good dream or a bad dream? Where were you? Did you feel comfortable or uneasy? All of these questions, and more, are going to help you interpret your own dream about your ex-girlfriend – and you may be surprised to find out that dreaming about your ex-girlfriend may not be about her at all!
Some people think that dreams are random, but that seems rather silly considering how complex our minds are. There is too much evidence that are dreams mean something more than just random nonsense.
I’ve been interpreting my dreams since I was young, and since I’ve done it thousands of times, and I’ve gained a lot of insight into my life from them, I think I have a pretty good leg to stand on when it comes to dissecting dreams and figuring out what they really mean. So, what did your dream about your ex-girlfriend really mean?
Dream Dictionary Interpretations
Many people look to dream dictionaries to find out the meaning of their dream. While this may help in some cases, I don’t think that one definition applies to everyone. In fact, as we are all individuals with our own thoughts, desires, history, passions, etc…It doesn’t make sense that one interpretation would be correct for you, me, your friend, and the guy down the street.
I found one interpretation on a popular site for an ex-girlfriend dream as follows:
A dream featuring your ex-girlfriend represents the relationship between masculine and feminine, or fears related to sexuality. The dream can imply that you are looking for some quality in yourself or your life that the ex-girlfriend represents to you. – Dream Dictionary Now
If that resonates you with, then cool – it may be true for you.
But if it doesn’t really resonate with you, and you really want to know what the dream meant for you personally – then you have to interpret your own dream by figuring out what the elements of your dream really meant to you as well as what is going on in your life that may warrant such a dream.
I know that may sound exhausting, but when you know what to look for in the dream, it really only takes a few minutes of thought and reflection to really figure out what dreaming about an ex-girlfriend (or anything else for that matter) really means to you.
Common Dream Symbols
First, I want to say that there are some symbols that are probably pretty relevant to all of us. Flying can be a symbol of elevation or freedom, for example. In the following video there are some other thoughts on common dreams and their symbols…

But, I still believe that the personal aspects, like your ex-girlfriend, need to be interpreted by you – not by what a general ex-girlfriend interpretation means.
So, let me take you through how I interpret my dreams in a way that will help you interpret your dream about your ex-girlfriend.
Step 1 – Taking Into Account Your Current Life
The fact is that usually love dreams are not really about love. Yes, sometimes they are about fantasies that you have been having or thoughts you have been thinking.
For instance, if you watched a movie yesterday that reminded you of your ex-girlfriend, then subconsciously your ex-girlfriend may have been on your mind. In that case, the dream about her is probably just a reflection of your thoughts from the movie.
Sometimes dreams also come from a desire. For instance, if you want to be with your ex-girlfriend, then dreaming about an ex-girlfriend is likely tied to that desire.
But, if you have no apparent reason for dreaming about an ex-girlfriend, then you need to look at your life.
Take a look at your life and figure out what has been going on.
- Has there been a lot of stress?
- Have you had some big changes?
- Did you meet someone new?
- Are you falling in love with someone else?
- Are you feeling insecure lately?
- Are you working your ass off for something new?
Be honest and figure out what your thoughts, emotions, and actions have been geared towards lately.
Step 2 – What Does Your Ex-Girlfriend Mean To You?
Next, figure out what your ex-girlfriend really means to you when you think about her.
- Do you have hatred towards her?
- Does she make you feel insecure?
- Does she remind you of better or easier days?
What are the first thoughts that come to mind when you think about her?
Example Of How To Use This Information: If you’ve been stressed lately, and your girlfriend reminds you of stress, then your stress may just be playing out as a manifestation of your ex-girlfriend. She may be a symbol for stress and really your dream was about you trying to deal with stress, not her.
Step 3 – Where Were You In The Dream?
Next, think about where you were in the dream.
- Were you back in time at the old hangout you used to go to?
- Were you somewhere in the present?
- Were you at a place you saw on TV?
- Were you in your home?
Once you figure out where you were – decide what that places means to you. An old hangout may be relaxing, somewhere in the present may be stressful, a place on TV may be exciting, and your home may be comfortable. It is really up to your definition.
For instance, if you were in a forest with your ex-girlfriend, you and I might have different thoughts associated with that. A forest for me would be relaxing whereas a forest for you might be terrifying or confusing.
Example Of How To Use This Information: Let’s say that you decided your ex-girlfriend really is a symbol for stress from the above step, and in the dream you were with her in your boss’s office. This probably means that you are stressed about a deadline you have, or some pressure you are under, or a decision you are making at work, or about your life choices and where you are headed career-wise. Only you know what resonates as the true interpretation.
Step 4 – Keep Going With Any Other Details Of The Dream You Can Remember
Now, think about other things in the dream.
- Were there other people? If yes, what do they mean to you and did they influence the dream? What emotion did you feel towards them?
- Was there music? If yes, what does that music mean to you?
- Did your ex-girlfriend morph into someone else? What does that person mean to you?
- How did you feel in the dream?
- What was the overall mood? Was it happy, sad, or boring?
All of these question will help you interpret your dream with your ex-girlfriend and give you the answers you are looking for.
The truth is that very seldom are love dreams about anything other than working through issues you are having in the present. The people (like your ex-girlfriend) and places in your dreams are usually symbols.
The second most common thing is just playing out fantasy. You may play out various scenarios in your mind with your ex-girlfriend. It doesn’t mean you want her back – or even that she is coming back…it just means that she is a memory and for whatever reason, you want to play with that memory.
Could Your Dream Be Prophetic?
That said – your dream may be prophetic. There is a chance that you are going to see her again and you are dreaming about that moment.
Any prophetic dreams I’ve had have been very intense and the prophetic part was usually the focus. In other words, the dreams were pretty specific and unscattered (not going from one scene to the next.)
For instance, once I dreamt about my dog on a surfboard and she fell off and hurt her back. In the dream, I carried her with concern inside and I was passionate about the fact that she hurt herself. I was in Hawaii in the dream (which was a vacation that I was going on in a few months in real life) and the people in my dream were all compassionate and loving people from my past.
At the time, I thought my dream was thanks to my excitement about my upcoming vacation, but when we got back from Hawaii a few months later, my dog suffered some issues with her back and ultimately died from the complications. The dream had been prophetic of what was going to happen to her and when.
Another prophetic dream was about an ex-friend of mine.
She was living in a gorgeous home in the country and I was taking a tour. I noticed various things in the house, but when we went outside I noticed the slope of the land and how her home was on an acreage. I saw another home about an acre up the hill. The whole dream was as if I was really walking around her home.
A few months later, I was on Facebook and found that friend. She had pictures of her new home up and it was exactly what I had dreamt about inside as well as outside. The home up the hill even had the same details I had seen in the dream.
Want Another Way To Find Out What Your Dream Is About?
Lucid dreaming takes dreaming to a whole new level. It essentially means that you are aware that you are dreaming. Personally I’ve been able to do some very cool things in my lucid dreams.
If you want to ask your ex-girlfriend why she is in your dreams, then try having a lucid dream with her in it.
In my lucid dreams, I’m normally trying to talk to past loved ones instead of exes, but if you ask for your ex-girlfriend to show up, you may be able to have a conversation with your subconscious or unconscious mind that gives you insight into why she is in your dream.
Or – if you believe in this stuff – you may actually have a conversation with your ex-girlfriend’s spirit.
Whatever Resonates With You
The truth is that whatever resonates with you as true, is probably the truth. Don’t try to read more into your interpretation than is actually there.
Take a look at your life, what your ex-girlfriend means to you, and the whole context of the dream, and then decide what the dream was really about. The simplest answer is usually the right one.
