The Greek Myth of Aries
The Greek myth of Aries is a tale of deceit, danger, and valor that had many implications outside of the story itself.
As the story goes, King Athamas and his first wife, Nephele, birthed two children, Phrixus and Helle. The marriage between the king and his wife eventually soured, and Athamas remarried a woman named Ino.
Ino was fiercely resentful of Athamas’ children, especially his son, Phrixus. From the outset of their relationship, she began a plot to have Phrixus killed.
Ino’s evil plan was quite detailed. First, she induced a famine on the corn crop in the lands controlled by King Athamas. The king sent a messenger to discuss the famine with the Oracle of Delphi to see what could be done about the terrible famine that was threatening his people.
Ino intercepted the messenger, and falsified a message from the Oracle: To break the famine, you must sacrifice your son, Phrixus.
Reluctantly, the king agreed to sacrifice his son for the good of his people. He ascended Mount Laphystium with Phrixus and Helle and prepared to make the sacrifice.
However, Nephele had received word of the deceit being carried out by Ino and jumped into action to thwart the plan. She sent Aries, the golden ram, to Mount Laphystium to save her child.
Phrixus and his sister Helle were swept away by Aries the ram, where he carried them to safety. Sadly, during their journey, Helle fell from the back of the ram and drowned in the Dardanelles, which were renamed Hellespont in her honor.
Aries carried Phrixus to safety in Cholcis, and at the end of their journey, Phrixus sacrificed Aries to the gods. Aries golden fleece was shorn, and Phrixus gave it to King Aeëtes of Colchis as a gift. In exchange, Aeëtes offered Phrixus his daughter’s hand in marriage.
As a reward for his service, Nephele committed Aries to the sky, where his constellation is seen to this day.
As for the golden fleece that was given to King Aeëtes, it hung in a forest protected by a dragon that never slept. The golden fleece shined brightly in the forest like a second son for quite some time.
Back on the Grecian mainland, Pelias, cousin of Phrixus had ascended to the throne of Iolcus in Thessaly. This throne rightly belonged to Jason, and Pelias agreed to step down in favor of Jason, provided he was able to accomplish a great feat: Jason was to bring back the golden fleece from the forest in Colchis.
The story of Jason’s fight for the golden fleece is well known and told in the epic of Jason and the Argonauts.
Being an Aries: Personality Traits
Lovers of freedom, Aries tend to be brash, brave, and determined. Aries representatives are predisposed to many different personality traits, both positive and negative that contribute to who they are.
Positive Traits of Aries
The Aries representative is prone to take on many positive personality traits such as:
- Leadership
- Determination
- Fearlessness
- Self-confidence
- Enterprise
- Frankless
- Sense of adventure
- Strong-willed
- Organized
- Outspokenness
These traits manifest themselves in many ways. Aries are people with strong wills, strong opinions, and a strong will to succeed. Born leaders, they never shy away from competition or a challenge.
Aries are typically very outspoken and are prone to anxiety if they’re forced to suppress their thoughts and feelings. Aries are also warm and charming, which tends to magnetize the people around them.
Virtually impervious to change, Aries thrives in new situations and surroundings, making them ideal leaders, especially in changing environments. This is attributed to the fact that Aries is the first zodiac sign, making them the starters of the zodiac.
Negative Traits of Aries
To the contrary, Aries are also prone to some negative personality traits as well:
- Tactlessness
- Naive
- Entitled
- Selfishness
- Rash
- Inpatient
- Prideful
- Vain
As a self-possessed cardinal sign, and a fire sign, Aries may be prone to a “bull in a china shop” type of mentality. They sometimes lack tact or empathy towards others. Aries may harbor harsh opinions, which they’re happy to share at a moment’s notice, regardless of whether it’s appropriate.
Aries are usually not calculated, and they tend to abandon perfectly good ideas or projects in favor of other, newer ideas. Aries tend to have a “my way or no way” approach to things and can be undiplomatic at times.
Aries representatives are known for their hardened exterior appearance, and will often resist the urge to open up to friends and family about things that upset them at the risk of compromising their bravado. As a result, Aries are prone to bouts of depression or loneliness.
Career Outlook for Aries
Given Aries predisposition as a strong leader, their career outlook tends to be bright.
Ambitious and creative, Aries typically thrive in the workplace, especially in management roles.
Given Aries predisposition to thrive in changing environments, they’re ideal candidates to lead change in the workplace.
By the same token, the bold and brash nature of Aries can work against them in the workplace as well. As an Aries, it’s important to balance the inherent bravado of their personality with a softer touch.
Keep in mind that other members of the team bring valuable insight and experiences, and that should be valued as well. The “my way or the highway” approach that Aries are prone to can come back to bite them in the workplace.
If Aries can balance that aspect of their personality, they tend to be a great asset to a company, whether in a management or support role. Thanks to their can-do attitude and positivity, they tend to motivate other members of the workforce.
While being brash and competitive can be a great attribute to have, Aries must also focus on being a member of the team, too.
Love & Relationships Under the April 1 Zodiac
For most people, the love and relationship outlook of their zodiac sign is critically important. When it comes to Aries, their outlook on love and relationships is a good one.
Aries are known to be impulsive and passionate lovers. They can be forthright, and don’t like to wait. It’s common for an Aries to profess their feelings now, and consider the implications later.
Aries are strong believers in love at first sight and tend to be attracted to those who are as bold and ambitious as they are. When single, Aries has a tendency to get so wrapped up in their work and social lives that they forget they’re even single. But, when love does come knocking, they’re quick to answer the door.
Generally very attractive, it’s not uncommon for an Aries to fall in love early in their life. As they’re prone to extremes, they also may fall into and out of love several times before they find the right person for them.
While Aries is quick to fall in love, they take their time concerning marriage. When an Aries finally weds, they’re prone to having a large, happy family. Aries relationships work best when the other party is born on the 4th, 6th, 8th, 13th, 15th, 17th, 22nd, 24th, 26th or 31st.
Most Compatible Zodiacs
When it comes to compatibility, Aries is most compatible with the other two fire signs, Leo and Sagittarius. These three signs have a similar outlook on life, and when together, passion and energy run high, supporting the fiery nature of Aries.
While these two signs are great matches for Aries, many other signs can also produce a compatible match, as well. Aries tend to be impatient, brash and sometimes hard-headed, but these negative traits tend to mellow when they’re in love.
Beyond the fire signs, Aries also have great compatibility with Libra and Gemini. With Libra, Aries typically find a warm and trustful match that fits in seamlessly with their nature.
Geminis are known for being high energy and deeply trusting, two characteristics that mesh well with Aries. Their trust and understanding provide a strong foundation from which to build, and their high-energy nature keeps both Aries and Gemini engaged and focused on their relationship.
Least Compatible Zodiacs
Of course, there are also a few signs that are less compatible with Aries.
Virgo tends to be much more subtle and subdued than Aries, which is a poor match given the high-energy nature of Aries. While Aries tends to be a bold leader, Virgo has a tendency to criticize and find things to pick at, which leads to plenty of quarrels.
With Capricorn, Aries finds another bold leader with high energy. But, their styles tend to conflict, especially when it comes to finances. While Capricorn is typically more reserved and frugal, Aries likes to spend, which can lead to relationship issues.
Who to Avoid
While Virgo and Capricorn tend to be poor matches for Aries, it’s possible for them to reconcile any differences to forge a strong and lasting bond. But one sign, in particular, is even less compatible than these two.
Taurus serves as almost the polar opposite of Aries. Taurus is reserved and likes to take things slow whereas Aries is bold and prefers to jump in head first.
Taurus and Aries will butt heads constantly on everything from finances to life in the bedroom to how they interact with others. Of course, it’s possible for a relationship between these two to work. However, the predisposition of the stars suggests it will be especially difficult.
