The story of Capricorn is one of the most interesting and tragic stories in Greek mythology.
In ancient Greece, there was a mythical race of sea-goats that had the top half of a goat, with the lower half of a fish, almost like a sort of mermaid. These sea-goats were different from other animals, in that they were intelligent and honorable creatures who could think and reason on a near-human level.
The father of this race of animal was Pricus, and Pricus was created by Chronos, the Greek god of time. Chronos created Pricus, an immortal, and gave him the same power to affect time that Chronos possessed.
While the sea-goats lived in the water, near the shore, they were drawn to land. The sea-goats would emerge from the sea to sun themselves on the shore. But, the more time the goats spent on the shore, the more they began to evolve from their mythic form.
Before long, the sea-goats that sunned themselves on the shore were changing. Their fish-like tails replaced with the hind legs of a regular goat. Once the evolution was complete, they could never return to the water again. Worse yet, they also lost their ability to think and reason like they had in the past.
This upset Pricus greatly. He used the powers granted to him by Chronos to turn back time before the sea-goats had turned themselves into regular land goats. Pricus implored the sea-goats to never leave the water for the land.
But, no matter what Pricus did, he couldn’t stop the natural progression of his children. They were drawn to the land, and no matter how many times Pricus turned back time, the sea-goats would always arrive at the same fate.
Heartbroken, Pricus resigns himself to the fate of the sea-goats and stops trying to turn back time to reverse their fortunes. In his misery, he begs Chronos to allow him to die, as he couldn’t bear to have to watch the other sea-goats evolve into regular goats, his entire race phasing out before his eyes. Plus, Pricus knew the loneliness that would await him, as the last remaining sea-goat on earth.
Instead of relieving Pricus of his immortality, Chronos commits Pricus to the night sky. Now, Pricus can keep a close eye on all of his children regardless of how far they travel from the shore.
