The Story of Cancer
The myth of Cancer is a short one, as far as Greek mythology goes.
The god Zeus has made quite a mess for himself as a result of his infidelity. This particular infidelity resulted in the birth of Hercules, who is perhaps the most well-known Greek god of all time.
Hera, Zeus’ wife, was resentful of Hercules, as he served as a reminder of her husband’s infidelity. She cast a spell of madness upon Hercules, and he committed a major crime as a result of the spell cast by Hera.
To be forgiven for this crime, Hercules was forced to embark on a twelve-part trial which was filled with great danger. One of the trials Hercules was tasked with was killing the Hydra, a monstrous nine-headed sea monster.
While Hercules was fighting Hydra, Hera sent a giant crab to aid Hydra in its fight with Hercules. The giant crab was no match for the epic strength of Hercules, and he was quickly dispatched. As a reward for his loyalty and service, Hera placed the crab among the constellations.
There also exists a second myth of Cancer in Greek mythology.
In this story, Typhon, the god of monsters, began terrorizing all of the gods of Mount Olympus, including Poseidon, god of the sea. The gods of Mount Olympus retreated into hiding, but before they did, Poseidon tasked Crios, an enormous crab with the task of protecting the sea nymphs, who were Poseidon’s daughters.
Blessed with immortality from Poseidon, Crios had little trouble protecting the sea nymphs from any peril. But, as time went on the nymphs grew impatient, and believed that any danger they were in had passed.
A few of the nymphs escaped into the open ocean. Since Crios has to protect the remaining nymphs, he tasked a giant squid named Vamari with finding and returning the runaway nymphs.
Little did Crios know, but Vamari had bad intentions for the nymphs, and when he found them, he ate them. Vamari returned to Crios and told him that despite much searching, he was unable to locate the runaway nymphs.
Crios could tell a lie when he heard one, and he immediately knew that Vamari wasn’t truthful and that he had found and ate the nymphs.
An epic battle between Crios and Vamari ensued. Crios was able to kill Vamari, but not before Vamari was able to exact some serious damage on the giant crab. Since Crios was immortal, he was forced to live out all of eternity in severe pain.
When Poseidon returned from exile, he was impressed by the bravery and loyalty shown by Crios. Poseidon relieved Crios of his pain, but not his immortality. He placed Crios into the night sky, where he became the constellation Cancer.
Regardless of which story you’re looking at, the myths of Cancer speak to a character who is fiercely loyal and prepared for battle at a moments notice, even if the result of that battle can cause severe pain.

Cancers are a fascinating group that possesses many personality traits, both good and bad.

- Loyal

Meanwhile, there are some negative traits characteristic of Cancers, as well:
- Moody

- Stubborn
Cancers are known most for their fierce loyalty and deep sentimentality. They can be difficult to get to know at the surface, but once you’ve broken through their hard exterior, they attach themselves to you. Cancers are very protective of their home and their loved ones and will go to any length to keep them safe.
Cancers are usually artistic and keep several hidden talents below the surface that they reveal only to those closest to them. Cancers are known to be like a sponge, absorbing the energy around them to blend in with their surroundings.
On the other hand, Cancers tend to focus too much on setting goals and dreaming of the future without taking action to accomplish those goals. They can also be manipulative and like to play the puppet master when given the opportunity. Cancers can be stubborn and resistant to change, and they rarely forgive anyone who has committed a transgression against them.
Many of the best qualities of Cancer can also manifest themselves negatively. Their fierce loyalty and tenacious spirit can put them in situations they aren’t quite prepared for. Cancers tend to avoid conflict where possible, but in instances where conflict is unavoidable, the Cancer always seems to pick the wrong fight and is often overmatched by their opponent.
Quick to take up someone else’s battle whom they’re loyal to, Cancers can sometimes get in way over their heads, and they’re usually the one left to pay the price.
Career Outlook for July 5 Cancers
Cancer is bestowed with a great and varied range of skills that translate well to many different careers.
Perhaps the greatest skill of Cancer is their intuition. Often, a Cancer representative will know how the winds of change are blowing within their work environment long before they’re told, and it’s one of their greatest skills.
Cancer representatives are skilled at reading people, and they’re often in trusted positions of power, as higher-ups feel comfortable delegating important tasks to them because they know the Cancer will be up to the task.
Fiercely independent, Cancer is known to “burn the midnight oil” when it comes to their work, and often feel the most comfortable when working on projects after hours and on their own time. They loathe the feeling of an overbearing manager breathing down their neck and expect others to trust in them and their quality of work instead of micromanaging their every move.
Cancer isn’t driven by fortune and fame, but rather a healthy work-life balance that leaves them feeling fulfilled without being drained by interoffice politics or long hours.
They make good management material, but sometimes the negative aspects of the Cancer personality can get in the way. Cancer certainly knows how to hold a grudge, and it’s difficult for them to forgive transgressions against them, especially in the workplace.
In their careers, Cancer’s greatest adversary is their emotions. While their emotional responses sometimes act as fuel for them to complete projects they’re passionate about by any means necessary, that same emotion can become a negative, as well.
Cancer has a hard time applying themselves to less-than-interesting projects and may lash out passive-aggressively, either by producing sloppy work, or souring relationships with other members of the team.
When it comes to money, comfort is the key. Cancer isn’t driven by fortune and fame, but rather by comfort. Cancer representatives like the finer things in life, so they’re happy to spend extra in exchange for quality. But, they don’t covet luxury. They simply seek to make themselves happy and comfortable, and once they’ve achieved that, they’ll often sacrifice money to spend more time with loved ones.
Being a Cancer: Love & Relationships
Loyal, sympathetic and protective, the Cancer is driven by a desire to start their own family.
People born under the July 5 zodiac put great value on family and the stability of their home. Finding love is the greatest pursuit of Cancer. Once a Cancer has fallen in love, they’re brimming with enthusiasm and are eager to share all of their time with their loved one.
While the love and relationship outlook of Cancers is generally positive with most signs, there are a few that are more or less compatible than the others.
Who are Cancers Most Compatible With?
Cancers are most apt to spend their time with a sign that’s able to understand and relate to their outlook on family, love, and passion. As such, Cancers are quite compatible with the other two water signs, Scorpio and Pisces. These signs tend to share a similar vision concerning life, love and the pursuit of happiness.
The most compatible sign of all for a Cancer is the Virgo. Virgo can understand the emotional nature and importance that Cancer places on the family unit. Relationships between the two tend to be down-to-earth and long-lasting.
Who are Cancers Least Compatible With?
On the other hand, there’s one sign in particular that appears to be a less-than-stellar match for Cancer. Cancer and Aquarius have a hard time getting on the same page about love.
While Cancer tends to be sensitive, they’re known to become cold and distant if they feel boundaries need to be set. Meanwhile, Aquarius has a hard time understanding or breaking down these boundaries.
Aquarius is also filled with boundless energy; always ready for an adventure. This is quite the opposite of Cancer, who prefers to relax and enjoy time with loved ones at home.
As with any zodiac sign, if the bond is strong enough, you can certainly break through the predispositions. However, a relationship between Cancer and Aquarius is typically ill-advised.
